Manitoba’s Opportunity to Build a Bioscience Hub
Manitoba has a bioscience story is an exciting one. The province is home to strong research institutions, innovative companies, world-class expertise, and a health system that creates opportunities for research and innovation. The challenge is creating the conditions for further potential growth.
Across Manitoba, momentum is building to strengthen the province’s bioscience ecosystem and position it for long-term growth.
One of the most important opportunities is clinical research. Manitoba has the potential to attract more clinical trials, giving companies another reason to invest in the province while providing Manitobans with opportunities to participate in the development and evaluation of new treatments and technologies.
The Manitoba Clinical Trials Working Group, established in 2025 from the Manitoba government’s commitment to expanding clinical trials, brings together leaders from across the ecosystem. The group is focused on identifying the barriers that can make Manitoba less competitive for clinical research and finding ways to address them.
These improvements matter beyond individual trials. A strong clinical research environment can create a ripple effect across the economy, attracting investment, supporting skilled jobs, strengthening research capacity, and creating opportunities for companies to commercialize new technologies in Manitoba.
Infrastructure is another critical part of the equation. Bioscience companies need specialized spaces to conduct research, develop products, and scale their operations The Manitoba Métis Federation’s acquisition of the former National Research Council facility is an important step towards addressing Manitoba’s shortage of available laboratory space. Making existing lab infrastructure available to start-ups, researchers, and emerging companies can help create a more supportive environment for innovation and give companies more opportunity to grow in the province.
At the same time, Manitoba is seeing increased activity around artificial intelligence and its applications in biotechnology. AI has the potential to transform everything from drug discovery and clinical trial design to diagnostics and data analysis. Realizing that potential
will require people who understand both the technology and the unique needs of the bioscience sector. Bioscience Association Manitoba (BAM) is working to address emerging workforce gaps in AI and clinical trials through new initiatives designed to build those capabilities in Manitoba.
The province’s opportunity extends even further. Supporting bioscience growth means connecting research with industry, helping companies access capital, developing pathways to commercialization, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring that entrepreneurs have the resources they need at every stage of growth.
